With most people living in cities, we don’t have the space to have traditional gardens or small family farms.  We need to be creative in how we raise our food.  Think vertically instead of horizontally, think about permaculture and aquaponics, think about animals that are easy to raise in small areas.  We also need to care about the earth which will drive the desire to develop a healthy relationship with it.  You will be driven to learn how to preserve it by maximizing the use of water, minimizing waste, creating something good from byproducts – composting, and increasing yield through technology and efficiency among other things.  Learning by doing naturally cultivates relationships.  Relationships built around common interest lead to community, and time spent gardening, cooking, and creating fosters a better relationship with others and yourself.

Gardens and urban farms are a fantastic opportunity to develop a community, build relationships, and spend time reflecting.  In cities today, there are older people with land, but not enough energy to maintain a garden, and young people with the energy and desire to garden, but not enough space or know how.

Cultivate is a community to bring these people together.  If you have the space to have a garden, and would like people to assist you with it, please send me (nathanael@cultiv-ate.com) the address of the garden to put on the map below as well as a way to contact you.  If you would like to garden, but don’t have the space, find the garden closest to you and reach out to the owner to see how you can help them.

My Garden

My Garden

Audrey Hepburn said, "to plant a garden is to have hope for tomorrow."  Others argue that gardening is an act of defiance towards the forces that control our current food chain.  I have been told that I have lots of hope, and enjoy being defiant.  I guess gardening is...
